Lighting is essential in photography. There will be no photos without light.

There are millions of photography tips out there, but here’s one of my most basic photography tip for you. It begins before you even pick up the camera.

Find out where the light is coming from.

If you’re outside, look for the sun, or any surfaces where the sun might be reflecting off of. If you’re inside, look for windows, lamps etc.

Once you know what the light source is, and where it is coming from, the next step is to learn how that light affects your image. The amount of light, and the direction of light greatly impacts your final image. In some cases, it will define your image.

So, training yourself to see light and use light allows you to be as creative as you’d like.

To get you started, here’s a list of posts related to taking pictures in various lighting conditions.

How to:

1. Take pictures in the bright sun

2. Take pictures in low light situations

3. Use window light to dramatically improve your pictures
